As a Dane (living in Copenhagen), of course I will be bringing my kids to the historic event today, January 14th, where Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicates her throne after 52 years "on the job" and the new king is proclaimed from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace.
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has exemplified remarkable empathy and visionary leadership throughout her reign, deeply connecting with her people and inspiring positive change. Her insightful guidance has been a beacon of hope, fostering a compassionate and forward-thinking society in Denmark.

Today I was reminded of Queen Margrethe's profound New Year's Eve speech in 2023. In her address, she highlighted one of the most significant opportunities as well as challenges facing our world: the advent of Artificial Intelligence.

As of the latest information available, artificial intelligence (AI) education in schools is still an emerging field globally, with only a limited number of countries having developed and endorsed K-12 AI curricula. According to a UNESCO report, only 11 countries have established government-endorsed K-12 AI curricula, and an additional four countries are in the process of developing such curricula. This indicates a growing but still nascent focus on AI education at the K-12 level worldwide.
In terms of specific examples, China and the United States have been actively integrating AI education into their systems, albeit in different ways. China has been using its centralized authority to mandate AI education in high school curricula and encouraging AI companies to partner with schools and universities for student training. Since 2018, the Chinese government has approved 345 universities to offer an AI major. In contrast, the United States is taking a more decentralized approach, with varied AI education curricula and industry partnership initiatives across different states. This approach in the U.S. places a significant emphasis on computer science education and allows for greater experimentation and innovation in the development and implementation of AI curricula.
This research being done is a vital step in understanding the global landscape of tech education and preparing our future leaders to tackle the grand challenges of our time, including mastering AI.
